Today the school hosted it's annual Cross-country race day. The PTA have traditionally provided a BBQ to follow this so most children in the school will buy a sausage and a popsicle (icey-pole) for lunch. Over the last two years we've been gradually upgrading from the white bread, sugary sauce and what I very naughtily refer to as the a'holes & elbows sausages. This time we went a step further than just providing wholemeal bread and non-sugar sauce. We got our lovely local butcher to produce "proper" sausages with natural casings, no fillers and decent quality meat. All the children were also able to choose whether they wanted some lettuce, carrot and/or sliced cucumber with the bread. As an alternative to the popsicles we also made up big batches of fresh fruit smoothies that we blended to order. It's great to see that it is possible to balance fun and fundraising but still offer decent quality food!
